Hi – I’m Tonia and welcome to my food blog, Basil & Oregano. I hope you’ll stay awhile!
Update: As of June 2017, Jim and I have made the decision to focus seriously on our health and fitness. At home, we make delicious meals that are low carb, low saturated fat, high protein, and nutrient dense. We believe it makes sense to carry these new habits over to the blog, so I hope you enjoy this new fork in the road!
Who am I?
I am a marketing geek by day and a food bloggin’ geek by night (I’m also an Amazon Prime junkie 24/7 and a Costco junkie on the weekends). Basically, during the day, I help other people and companies build marketing plans for their businesses so that they may be more successful in their endeavors. At night, and generally, during weekends, I’m cooking away, or writing, or taking photographs, or tinkering with this site in some way, shape or form (or on Amazon!). In my spare time (ha!), I enjoy walking along the beach or in-between the trees, or simply playing with my husband, Jim, and our two sweet cats, Buddy (Boo-Bear) and Skittles (Sku). The three of us make the perfect, little, lovely family. Maybe someday we will have human children too. Can you imagine? It would be like having cats with thumbs! I’m not sure if I can handle that.
I love talking and texting with my best friend multiple times a day too. She also happens to be my Sister. Hey, Sis! Deb and I don’t need much to entertain ourselves. When we’re together, we are goofy as hell and stuff just seems to happen to us or near us—I just can’t explain it—but it doesn’t take long before the two of us are ROFL.
Here’s my wonderful husband, Jim. He really does deserve the Nobel peace prize. Why? He has put up with my craziness for years, has never lost his cool, and he’s still here!
What’s Jim’s role in this big blog adventure, you ask? He does a little of everything, actually. He loves food as much as I do, so he’s the food critic around here and he’s not shy about throwing new ideas out on what the next recipe should be. In addition to being my
sous chef fetcher of all things on the top shelf, he helps with dishes and herding of cats. Occasionally, when he’s in the mood, he’ll help with some of the technical and quality assurance stuff on the blog too.
Here’s the rest of my lovely, little family.
I usually have way more help in the kitchen than I actually need.
Can’t leave out Deborah! Here she is petting the horses. She loves animals as much as I do.
I do count us as fortunate. Our dream coming out of college was to go experience the world, and, early on, our professional life provided an excellent opportunity to travel the world and even live as expats abroad.
That experience changed our lives forever. During our travels abroad, we saw so many beautiful places and we met many wonderful, kind, and accepting people along the way.
The one thing I am most grateful for is all of the relationships we built through this experience and beyond. It really changed our perspective on the world. Those experiences enriched our lives and helped us grow as humans and individuals. We learned so much by sharing meals and recipes and having relaxed conversations with the local population, our co-workers, and other expats in the area. This simple connection built lifetime friendships with such amazing people, which we are so thankful for. We are better for knowing them all and I can’t help but think, if more people would be open to such things as sharing a meal and a conversation, we might have less fear and hate in our world.
Jim and I have always loved traveling. We always pick our places with two things in mind: food and water, and not the water you drink. I’m talking about the sea. We love, love, love the water! We love looking at it, being on it and the sounds and smells that come with it. We love eating and drinking near it, of course! Ha! What I’d love now is a view from my kitchen! I bet I’d burn everything…even more than I do now.
We hope you enjoy our site and have an opportunity to try some of the recipes here, which I add to on a regular basis. I plan to include recipes from our travels abroad too, along with good ol’ fashion American cooking.
Thanks again for stopping by! We’d love to hear from you!
